The children and spouses of the 14 people killed in the Dec. 2 terrorist attack in San Bernardino will be able to attend California state schools for free if a bill introduced by local legislators becomes law. Senate Bill 893 would waive tuition and fees for any University of California, California State University or California Community College campus, if the victim and dependent were both California residents on Dec. 2.

Members of the Inland delegation to Sacramento have different ideas for what they want the governor to talk about during his speech. Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown, D-San Bernardino, wants more money for seniors who receive supplemental security income and disability benefits.
When the recession hit, money for those beneficiaries went into the state’s general fund, said Cheryl Brown, who is not related to the governor. “That’s still going on, and everyone else has recovered,” she said. “They can’t buy their food. They can’t buy their medicine.”

In the sanctuary of the Azure Hills Church on Friday evening, Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown is at the third vigil in her district in as many days. Fourteen candles sit on a table near the altar, 14 roses to honor the victims of Wednesday’s shootings. Brown (D-San Bernardino) listens as Pastor Marlene Ferreras talks about the different ways in which people grieve. Some are intuitive grievers, the pastor says, feeling their way through the pain. But others, she adds, are action-oriented — “We do grief.”
