Cheryl Brown Gets Major Backing from United Domestic Workers of America, AFL-CIO

SAN BERNARDINO, CA (May 11, 2016) - Today, Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown's (D-San Bernardino) campaign is announcing the latest endorsement in her re-election campaign from the United Domestic Workers of America, AFL-CIO (UDW)/AFSCME Local 3930. United Domestic Workers of America (UDW)/AFSCME Local 3930 is a homecare union made up of over 93,000 in-home caregivers across the state of California. UDW caregivers provide care through the state’s In-Home Supportive Services program (IHSS), which allows over half a million California seniors and people with disabilities to stay safe and healthy at home.

"Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown cares about the lives of home care workers, seniors, and people with disabilities. She has fought every day to bring resources to programs that helps them most," said Doug Moore, UDW Executive Director. "UDW is proud to endorse Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown because she has demonstrated a consistent commitment to our seniors and Californians with disabilities making her worthy of another term as our assemblywoman."

"I am so excited to receive an endorsement from the United Domestic Workers of America," said Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown. "I believe we must do everything we can to help our seniors and those with disabilities receive the best care possible. An endorsement from the thousands of in-home caregivers represented by UDW validates my strong record and commitment to seniors and people with disabilities."

Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown has a deep understanding of the issues facing home care providers, having been one herself. She began caregiving at age 12 when her grandmother suffered a stroke, and continued to help other relatives over the years including her husband, Hardy Brown, who was first diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 2002.

As Chairwoman of the Assembly Aging and Long-Term Care Committee, Assemblywoman Brown increased funding in the budget for Caregiver Resource Centers which provided $4.9 million dollars and an additional 7% increase in restoration funding for Long-Term Care and In-Home Support Services that will ultimately save the state billions of dollars in future medical costs.

Assemblywoman Cheryl Brown is the officially endorsed Democratic candidate of the California Democratic Party running for re-election in California’s 47th district. The election is scheduled for California’s Presidential Primary Election on June 7, 2016.
